Wiring method for a three-level main distribution box

A three-level (three-phase) main distribution box distributes power from a three-phase supply to multiple circuits using a main MCCB, output MCBs, busbars, neutral, and earth connections.

Overview

A three-phase distribution box (DB) is designed to safely distribute electrical power to multiple loads while maintaining phase balance and protecting circuits from overloads and short circuits. It typically includes: Main switch (MCCB): Protects the entire system from overcurrent and short circuits.

Output MC

Bs: Protect individual circuits or loads. Busbars: Connect the main MCCB to the output MCBs for high-current distribution. Neutral and Earth links: Distribute neutral and grounding connections to all loads.

Optional RCCB/RCD: Provides additional protection against earth leakage.

Wiring Steps

Select Components: Choose MCCB and MCB ratings based on load requirements. Connect Incoming Supply: Connect all three phases (L1, L2, L3) from the main power supply to the input terminals of the MCCB.

Connect MCCB to MC

Bs: Use busbars to connect the output of the MCCB to the input of all three-phase MCBs. Only line terminals pass through the MCBs. Neutral Connection: Connect the neutral wire from the supply to the neutral busbar.

If multiple neutral links exist, interconnect them. Earth Connection: Connect the earth wire from the supply or earth pit to the earth busbar. Interconnect multiple earth links if present.

Load Connections: Connect each load to the output terminals of the corresponding three-pole MCB. For three-phase loads, connect all three phases; for single-phase loads, connect one phase and neutral as required. Optional RCCB/RCD: If used, connect it after the main MCCB, then feed the output MCBs from the RCCB.

Key Considerations

Phase Identification: Label each phase (L1, L2, L3) and corresponding terminals to avoid confusion during maintenance. Balanced Loading: Distribute loads evenly across the three phases to prevent overloading a single phase. Voltage Levels: In IEC-compliant systems, the voltage between phases is typically 400V AC, and between phase and neutral is 230V AC.

Safety: Ensure proper earthing and use insulated busbars for high-current connections.

Diagram Representation

A typical wiring diagram shows: Three incoming phase lines connected to the main MCCB.

Optional RCCB/RCD placed between MCCB and MCBs for additional protection. This setup ensures safe, efficient, and balanced distribution of three-phase power to all connected circuits while providing protection against overloads, short circuits, and earth faults.
