High temperature of cable tray

Stainless steel cable trays can withstand temperatures up to approximately 1200°F (649°C) while retaining significant structural strength.Material-Specific Temperature Limits
  • Fiberglass: Loses 10% of its rated strength at 100°F and up to 50% at 200°F. Additional supports are required above 100°F to maintain load capacity .
  • Aluminum (6063-T6 alloy): Retains most of its strength up to 200°F, loses over a third of its strength at 300°F, and is suitable for environments like Death Valley (134°F) without significant issues .
  • Low-Carbon Steel: Performs well up to 600°F with minimal strength loss. At 800°F, it loses about 10% of its strength, and at 1000°F, it retains only 50% of its room temperature strength . Protective coatings like zinc may degrade at temperatures above 788°F .
  • Stainless Steel (AISI 304 and 316): Most effective for high temperatures. At 800°F, it loses roughly 14% of its room temperature strength. Type 316 stainless steel retains about two-thirds of its strength even at 1200°F, outperforming type 304 by approximately 15% at extreme temperatures .
Cable Considerations

The maximum temperature a cable tray can handle is also limited by the cables it supports. Standard 600V building wires are rated for 90°C (194°F), while specialty cables like Teflon-insulated, nickel-coated wires can withstand up to 500°F . It is crucial to select a tray material that maintains structural integrity at the operating temperature of the installed cables.

Practical Implications
  • For extremely high-temperature environments, stainless steel trays are recommended.
  • Aluminum and low-carbon steel are suitable for moderately high temperatures but may require additional supports or consideration of coating limitations.
  • Fiberglass is only suitable for low to moderate temperatures due to rapid strength loss above 100°F.
  • Expansion joints and thermal contraction must be considered for metal trays exposed to large temperature differentials to prevent structural stress . In summary, stainless steel cable trays provide the highest temperature tolerance, making them ideal for applications where both the tray and supported cables are exposed to extreme heat.
