How to connect the fiber optic terminal box to the home

Connecting a home fiber optic terminal box involves careful mounting, routing the fiber cable, preparing connectors, and linking the ONT to your network for high-speed internet.Step 1: Choose the Location

Select a dry, accessible wall near a power outlet for the Optical Network Terminal (ONT) and your router. Avoid areas with high foot traffic, heat sources, or sharp edges that could damage the fiber cable. Ensure the wall can support the box and allows for proper cable routing with minimal bends .

Step 2: Mount the Fiber Terminal Box
  • Align the box on the wall and mark screw holes using a level.
  • Drill pilot holes and insert anchors if mounting on drywall, concrete, or brick.
  • Secure the box with screws, avoiding over-tightening to prevent damage to the enclosure .
Step 3: Route the Fiber Cable
  • Feed the incoming fiber drop through the grommet-sealed entry port of the box.
  • Leave a service loop of 10–15 cm inside the box to allow for future maintenance.
  • Route the ONT cable through a second port if needed, leaving a second service loop.
  • Avoid sharp bends; maintain a minimum bend radius of 30 mm to prevent signal loss or fiber breakage .
Step 4: Prepare and Connect the Fiber
  • Strip the outer jacket, buffer layer, and coating from the fiber using a proper fiber stripper.
  • Make a clean, perpendicular cut with a fiber cleaver and clean the ends to remove dust or debris.
  • Snap the pigtail connector into the socket adapter inside the terminal box.
  • Ensure the connector type matches your ISP requirements (commonly SC/APC for GPON networks) and is properly keyed .
Step 5: Connect the ONT
  • Use a patch cable (SC/APC to SC/APC) to connect the ONT to the fiber wall socket.
  • Power on the ONT and check the status lights. A solid green “Link” or “Optical” light indicates a proper connection.
  • If the light is red or flashing, check for excessive bends, poor splices, or signal loss .
Step 6: Test the Connection
  • Measure light levels using a power meter: acceptable range is typically -8 dBm to -27 dBm for GPON networks.
  • If loss exceeds -27 dBm, recheck splices, connectors, and cable routing.
  • Once verified, connect your router via Ethernet to the ONT and configure your network for internet access .
Safety Tips
  • Always wear safety glasses when handling fiber to protect against laser light and glass shards.
  • Avoid touching the fiber ends or connectors to prevent contamination.
  • If unsure, consider hiring a professional ISP technician to avoid damaging the delicate fiber . Following these steps ensures a reliable, high-speed fiber optic connection from the service entry point to your home network, maximizing performance and minimizing signal loss.
