Fiber optic cable for power supply

Fiber optic cables can carry power either as optical energy (Power-over-Fiber) or alongside low-voltage electrical power in hybrid cables, enabling remote powering of devices with electrical isolation.Power-over-Fiber (PoF)

Power-over-Fiber is a technology where optical fibers transmit light energy, which is then converted into electrical power at the receiving end using a photovoltaic cell. This allows devices to be powered remotely while maintaining complete electrical isolation, making it ideal for high-voltage environments, explosive atmospheres, or areas sensitive to electromagnetic interference . Typical systems use laser diodes emitting in the 750–980 nm range, and multimode fibers can carry hundreds of milliwatts to several watts, with potential for higher power using larger cores . PoF is lightweight, safe, and can be combined with data transmission on separate wavelengths.

Hybrid Fiber-Copper Cables

Some fiber optic solutions integrate low-voltage copper conductors with singlemode fiber, allowing simultaneous data and power delivery over the same cable. These hybrid cables are used in enterprise and campus networks to power devices like Wi-Fi access points, IoT devices, and small cells without additional conduit or heavy electrical infrastructure . This approach extends the reach of Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) systems beyond standard distance limitations while reducing cable bulk and installation complexity.

Fiber Optics on Power Lines (OPAC)

For electrical utilities, OPAC (Optical Power Attached Cable) is a type of fiber optic cable installed along overhead power lines. It can be wrapped around existing conductors or attached to ground wires, providing communication capacity without adding significant weight . OPAC cables are all-dielectric, small, and lightweight, designed to withstand environmental stress, temperature extremes, and ice buildup. They are commonly used for spans over 2 km and tower heights exceeding 200 meters, often using a loose tube design to prevent fiber stress.

Advantages
  • Electrical isolation reduces risk from high voltages or lightning.
  • Lightweight and flexible for installation in challenging environments.
  • Simultaneous data and power delivery in hybrid systems.
  • Safe for explosive or sensitive environments.
  • Extended reach for powering remote devices without heavy copper infrastructure.
Limitations
  • Power-over-Fiber efficiency is typically 20–30%, though higher efficiencies are possible .
  • High-power PoF requires larger photovoltaic receivers.
  • Hybrid fiber-copper cables are limited by the current-carrying capacity of the copper conductors.
  • Installation on power lines requires specialized equipment and careful stress management to avoid fiber damage . In summary, fiber optic cables can be effectively used for power delivery either through optical energy conversion or hybrid copper integration, offering safe, lightweight, and flexible solutions for remote powering and network applications.
