800g optical module speed

800G optical modules support data transmission speeds of up to 800 gigabits per second (Gbps).

Overview

An 800G optical transceiver is a high-speed module designed to transmit and receive data over fiber optic networks at a total rate of 800 Gbps. These modules convert electrical signals from switches, routers, or servers into optical signals for transmission and then back into electrical signals at the receiving end, enabling extremely fast communication between devices, racks, or data center rows.

Technical Specifications

Lanes and Modulation: Most 800G modules use 8 lanes of 100G each with PAM4 (Pulse Amplitude Modulation 4-level), allowing 53 Gbaud per lane and 2 bits per symbol. Form Factors: Common form factors include OSFP (Octal Small Form-factor Pluggable) and QSFP-DD (Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable Double Density), with OSFP leading high-performance 800G deployments. Breakout Modes: 800G modules can be logically divided into multiple lower-speed ports, such as 2x400G, to provide flexibility in network design.

Fiber Requirements: Modules typically require 16 optical fibers for full 800G operation, with single-mode fiber supporting distances up to 500 meters for DR8 modules.

Applications800

G optical modules are increasingly deployed in: AI-driven hyperscale data centers where high east-west traffic between GPUs demands extreme bandwidth. High-performance computing and cloud networks requiring fast, scalable interconnects. Data center upgrades where port density, power efficiency, and fabric simplification are critical.

AdvantagesHigh-Speed Transmission: Enables rapid data transfer at 800 Gbps. Low Power Consumption: More energy-efficient than lower-speed modules. High Capacity: Supports large-scale data-intensive applications like video streaming, cloud computing, and AI workloads.

Compact Size: Smaller form factor allows easier installation and flexible system design. In summary, 800G optical modules provide double the bandwidth of 400G modules, making them ideal for modern high-density, high-performance network environments while supporting flexible deployment options and efficient data center scaling.
