Introduction to Optical Module Indicator Lights

Optical module indicator lights provide visual feedback on power, link status, data activity, and transmission rates, helping monitor and troubleshoot fiber optic connections.

Key Functions of Indicator Lights

Power (PWR): A steady light indicates that the optical module is receiving the correct DC power supply, typically 5V, and is operational. Link Status (FX LINK / TX LINK): Steady light: Confirms that the fiber or twisted pair connection is established. Blinking light: Indicates active data transmission or reception over the fiber or copper interface.

Transmission Rate (FX100 / TX100): On: The port is operating at 100 Mbps. Off: The port is operating at a lower speed, such as 10 Mbps. Full Duplex / Collision (FDX / COL): FDX on: The module is transmitting and receiving simultaneously (full duplex).

FD

X off or COL blinking: Indicates half-duplex operation or a collision on the network.

How It Works

Optical modules convert electrical signals into optical signals using a Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly (TOSA), typically a laser diode or LED, and convert received optical signals back into electrical signals using a Receiving Optical Sub-Assembly (ROSA) with a photodetector. The indicator lights are connected to these circuits to reflect the module's operational state, including whether the laser is emitting light, the fiber link is active, or data is being transmitted.

Practical Use

Troubleshooting: Blinking or off lights can indicate fiber disconnection, incorrect speed settings, or duplex mismatches. Monitoring: Continuous observation of indicator lights allows network engineers to quickly identify link issues or verify proper module operation. Maintenance: Helps ensure that optical modules are functioning within expected parameters, including optical power output and signal integrity.

Understanding these lights is essential for maintaining reliable fiber optic communication and quickly diagnosing network issues.
