How to measure fiber optic attenuation values in pigtails

Fiber optic pigtail attenuation can be measured using insertion loss with a calibrated optical power meter and light source, or with an OTDR for diagnostic purposes, following proper launch and splice procedures.Understanding Attenuation

Attenuation is the reduction of optical power as light travels through a fiber, expressed in dB per kilometer. It results from absorption (conversion of light to heat by impurities like OH ions) and scattering (Rayleigh scattering from microscopic density variations in the glass) and can also include losses from splices, connectors, and bends in the fiber .

Common Measurement Methods
  1. Insertion Loss Method (Field Standard)
    • Connect a calibrated light source to the pigtail input and a power meter to the output.
    • Measure the optical power at the output and compare it to the reference power from the source.
    • Ensure proper mode conditioning for multimode fibers (e.g., mandrel wrap) and a small loop (~50 mm) for singlemode fibers to maintain single-mode propagation .
    • This method is non-destructive and provides ~0.1 dB accuracy, making it suitable for field testing of installed pigtails .
  2. OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer)
    • Use an OTDR to send pulses through the pigtail and measure backscatter to determine loss.
    • For short pigtails (10–30 meters), a launch reel or 1-km coil is recommended to accurately measure connector and splice losses at the near end .
    • OTDR allows diagnostic analysis, identifying splice points, connector losses, and events along the fiber, but may have slightly lower accuracy (~0.3 dB per km) compared to insertion loss .
  3. Cutback Method (Lab Standard)
    • Measure power at the far end of the fiber, then cut the fiber near the source and measure again.
    • The difference gives the pure fiber attenuation, eliminating connector losses.
    • Highly accurate (~0.05 dB) but destructive, so it is mainly used in laboratory or manufacturing settings .
Best Practices for Pigtail Testing
  • Use a good cleave and proper fusion splicing to minimize splice loss and measurement uncertainty .
  • Calibrate the power meter with the light source before testing.
  • For OTDR measurements, select the correct index of refraction and backscatter coefficient for the fiber type to ensure accurate readings .
  • Avoid using excessively short patch cords or adapters that can introduce errors; a launch cable or reel is recommended for short pigtails .
  • For bidirectional measurements, average the losses from both directions to compensate for backscatter mismatches . By following these methods and best practices, you can accurately measure the attenuation of a fiber optic pigtail, whether in the field or in a laboratory setting, ensuring reliable performance verification and compliance with industry standards.
