Nauru Smart Building Fiber Optic Cable Connection

Nauru now has its first undersea fiber optic connection via the East Micronesia Cable System (EMCS), enabling high-speed, reliable internet for smart buildings, businesses, and residents. Overview of the EMCS in NauruThe East Micronesia Cable System (EMCS) is a 2,250 km submarine fiber optic network connecting Nauru, Kiribati (Tarawa), and the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) (Pohnpei and Kosrae) to global subsea networks via HANTRU-1. Nauru's landing station is the second of four planned cable landing points across the Pacific, marking the island's first undersea fiber optic connection.

This connection replaces reliance on satellite links, which were slower, more expensive, and weather-dependent.

Technical Specifications

Cable Length: Approximately 2,250 km across the Pacific Capacity: Initial provisioned channel of 100 Gbps per country, scalable up to 10 Tbps Infrastructure: Cable Landing Station (CLS) in Nauru to house optical transmission and power feed equipment Connectivity: Links into the existing HANTRU-1 cable, providing access to global networks Technology: Single fiber pair with spectrum sharing between countries, ensuring high-speed, low-latency, and resilient communications Benefits for Smart Buildings and Digital InfrastructureThe EMCS enables high-speed broadband suitable for smart building applications, including: IoT integration: Real-time monitoring and automation of building systemsEnergy management: Efficient control of lighting, HVAC, and renewable energy systemsSecurity and surveillance: High-bandwidth support for video monitoring and cloud-based analyticsRemote services: Teleconferencing, e-government services, and digital payments Additionally, the fiber optic connection supports economic development, education, and public services, providing Nauru with a foundation for digital transformation.

Project Timeline and Funding

Implementation: Began in 2022, with completion and service expected by late 2025 Funding: Jointly supported by Australia, Japan, and the United States, with a total project cost of AUD 135 million Construction and Supply: Managed by NEC Corporation, including marine surveys, route engineering, cable installation, and testing ImpactThe EMCS will empower over 100,000 people in Nauru with faster, more affordable, and resilient internet services, enabling smart building technologies, improved digital access, and climate-resilient infrastructure. This marks a transformative step for Nauru's connectivity, supporting both private and public sector digital initiatives.
