Single-disc type drop fiber optic cable

A single-disc (single-core) drop fiber optic cable is a lightweight, bend-resistant cable designed to connect the main fiber network to individual homes or businesses, typically containing one optical fiber with central reinforcement for durability.Structure and Design

Single-disc drop cables usually feature a single optical fiber located at the geometric center of the cable, surrounded by a protective sheath. The fiber often uses G.657 small bending radius optical fiber, allowing installation with a bending radius as small as 20mm without signal loss. Reinforcements, either FRP (fiber-reinforced plastic) or steel wire, are placed parallel to the fiber to provide compression resistance and mechanical strength. The outer sheath is typically made of low-smoke-zero-halogen (LSZH) or flame-retardant PVC, ensuring safety and environmental compliance indoors, while outdoor versions may include waterproofing and UV-resistant jackets for durability in aerial or exposed installations .

Applications

Single-disc drop cables are primarily used in FTTH (fiber-to-the-home) and FTTP (fiber-to-the-premises) networks, serving as the last-mile connection between the distribution network and the end user. They are suitable for indoor routing through conduits or open wiring, and some designs can also be used for aerial or direct-buried outdoor installations. Their compact, lightweight design simplifies handling, splicing, and connectorization, making them ideal for residential and small enterprise deployments .

Key Features
  • Bend-resistant fiber for tight installation spaces
  • Central reinforcement for mechanical protection
  • Lightweight and flexible for easy installation
  • Flame-retardant and environmentally safe sheath
  • Single-fiber configuration for household or small-scale connections
  • Optional armored or figure-8 designs for aerial or outdoor use
Installation Considerations

Single-disc drop cables can be installed indoors, in ducts, or aerially. For outdoor aerial installations, some cables include a messenger wire or figure-8 design to support self-suspension between poles. For underground or direct-buried applications, cables may include water-blocking layers and rodent-resistant jackets. The simple structure allows for easy splicing, connectorization, and maintenance, and some modern designs incorporate FastAccess® technology for quicker fiber access during field installation . In summary, single-disc drop fiber optic cables provide a practical, durable, and flexible solution for last-mile fiber deployments, offering high bandwidth, low latency, and ease of installation for residential and small business networks .
