Installation of cable trays for computer room equipment

Proper cable tray installation ensures safe, organized, and code-compliant routing of electrical and communication cables in a computer room.

Planning and Preparation

Before installation, review the approved shop drawings to determine tray layout, lengths, and routing paths. Inspect all materials, including trays, ladders, and accessories, for damage or discrepancies, and remove unsuitable items from the site. Store trays horizontally on a flat surface with timber supports at regular intervals to prevent warping or moisture damage.

Ensure all tools and equipment comply with project requirements.

Tray Selection and Layout

Choose the appropriate tray type based on cable type, load, and environmental conditions. Ladder trays are preferred for computer rooms due to excellent ventilation, which helps dissipate heat from high-density cabling. Ventilated or solid-bottom trays may be used depending on aesthetics and heat considerations.

Maintain a minimum bend radius for cables at tray exits to prevent damage.

Support and Spacing

Cable trays must be mechanically supported according to load requirements. Common support methods include trapeze hangers for ceiling suspensions and cantilever wall brackets for vertical runs. Support spans should follow manufacturer specifications and account for the total anticipated cable weight.

Rung spacing of 150–230 mm (6–9 inches) is recommended for ladder trays to support cables effectively.

Cable Installation

Organize cables to prevent excessive bending and maintain proper separation between power and data lines. Cable fill should not exceed 40% of tray capacity to avoid overheating and ensure airflow. Fix cables at regular intervals using ties or clamps to maintain order and prevent sagging.

Label cables clearly with markers for easy identification and maintenance. When passing through fire-rated walls or floors, use appropriate fire-stopping methods to prevent fire spread.

Grounding and Bonding

Ensure all trays are properly bonded and grounded according to NEC Article 392 and local electrical codes. This protects both personnel and equipment from electrical faults.

Compliance and Safety

Follow BS E

N 61537 for tray systems and BS 6946 for channel supports in the UK, or equivalent local standards. Cable trays are supports, not walkways, and should not be used to carry personnel. Proper installation prevents cable damage, overheating, and system failures, ensuring long-term reliability.

By adhering to these guidelines, a computer room can maintain organized, safe, and efficient cable management, supporting both current operations and future upgrades.
