Live Wire Distribution Box

The live (phase) wire from the mains supply is connected to the line terminal of the main circuit breaker in the distribution box, providing power to all downstream circuits.

Live Wire Connection

In a distribution box, the incoming live wire (L), also called the phase or hot wire, is connected to the line terminal of the main circuit breaker (MCB). This serves as the primary source of electrical energy for the distribution board and ensures that all downstream circuits receive power when the breaker is switched on. For single-phase domestic installations, the live wire typically comes from the energy meter and enters the main distribution board (MDB) before being distributed to sub-circuits.

Single-

Pole vs Double-Pole BreakersSingle-Pole (1P) MCBs: Only the live wire is connected through the breaker, while the neutral bypasses the breaker and connects directly to the neutral busbar. This is common for standard lighting and socket circuits.

Double-

Pole (2P) MCBs: Both live and neutral wires pass through the breaker, allowing simultaneous disconnection of both wires in case of a fault. These are often used for higher-capacity or special loads.

Neutral and Earth Connections

The neutral wire (N) is connected to the neutral busbar in the distribution box. For single-pole breakers, it bypasses the breaker, while for double-pole breakers, it passes through the breaker. The protective earth (PE) wire is connected to the earth busbar, ensuring safety against earth faults.

In setups with RCDs or RCCBs, the earth connection is essential for proper operation.

Wiring Sequence

Connect the phase (live) and neutral wires from the incoming supply to the main MCB. From the main MCB, connect the output to the RCCB or sub-MCBs for individual circuits. Connect the neutral wire from the RCCB to the neutral busbar.

Connect the earth wire from the supply and all metallic parts to the earth busbar.

Safety Considerations

Always ensure the power supply is turned off before working on the distribution box. Use appropriately rated MCBs and RCCBs according to the load requirements. Verify that all connections are tight and insulated to prevent short circuits or electric shocks.

By following these steps, the live wire is safely and correctly connected to the distribution box, ensuring reliable power distribution and protection for all circuits.
