How to install fiber distribution boxes on poles

Installing a fiber distribution box on a pole involves securing the box with a mounting kit or clamps, managing fiber slack, and ensuring proper cable protection and waterproofing.

Preparation

Choose the Location: Select a pole that is accessible for maintenance, stable, and away from environmental hazards such as direct water flow or excessive sunlight. Gather Tools and Materials: Common tools include a drill, screwdrivers, cable strippers, fiber cleaver, fusion splicer, torque wrench, nylon ties, stainless steel bands, and protective gear. Inspect the Box and Cables: Check the fiber distribution box for damage and ensure all components (splice trays, cable management rings, mounting hardware) are present.

Inspect fiber optic cables for any defects.

Mounting the Box

Use a Pole Mount Kit or Clamps: If your box comes with a pole-mount kit (e.g., FONS Gen 2/3 or YK-SX bracket), attach the mounting brackets to the pole using the supplied hardware or installer-provided bolts and lag screws. Secure the Box: Place the fiber distribution box onto the brackets or clamps and tighten the screws or stainless steel bands using a ratchet-strapping tool. Ensure the box is at a manageable height for maintenance.

Install Slack Storage: Coil the fiber optic cable slack into the storage compartment of the bracket, leaving enough length for future splicing or repairs. Adjust the compartment size if the kit allows.

Cable Management and Splicing

Prepare the Fiber Cables: Strip the outer sheath to the appropriate length, avoiding sharp bends. Clean the fiber end faces before splicing. Splice and Place in Tray: Perform splicing with a fusion splicer, ensuring splicing loss ≤ 0.

08 dB. Place the spliced fibers neatly in the splice tray, maintaining a curvature radius ≥ 10 times the fiber diameter. Protect the Splices: Wrap the spliced area with PVC tape, then waterproof tape (stretched), and finally an outer PVC layer.

Overlap each layer by half and press firmly to ensure sealing.

Final Steps

Secure Incoming and Outgoing Cables: Use cable glands or rubber grommets to protect cables from sharp edges and maintain waterproof integrity. Check Stability and Sealing: Ensure the box is firmly attached, the rubber seals are not exposed, and the box is level and secure. Test the Network: After installation, verify fiber continuity and signal quality to ensure proper operation.

By following these steps, the fiber distribution box will be safely mounted on the pole, with proper cable management and protection for long-term outdoor use.
