Optical Cable Configuration Chart

An optical cable configuration diagram illustrates the internal structure of fiber optic cables and their network connections, showing core, cladding, coatings, strength members, outer jacket, and system layout.Fiber Optic Cable Structure

A typical fiber optic cable consists of several layers designed to protect the delicate optical fibers and ensure efficient data transmission:

  • Core: The central part of the fiber, made of silica glass, which carries the light signal. Single-mode fibers have a core diameter of about 8–9 µm, while multimode fibers range from 50–62.5 µm .
  • Cladding: Surrounds the core and has a lower refractive index to reflect light back into the core, maintaining signal integrity. The cladding diameter is typically 125 µm .
  • Primary Coating/Buffer: A plastic layer that protects the core and cladding from mechanical damage without affecting light transmission .
  • Strength Members: Usually made of aramid yarn (Kevlar), these fibers prevent breakage during installation and protect against tension .
  • Outer Jacket: The external protective layer shields the cable from environmental hazards such as moisture, abrasion, and chemicals .
Types of Fiber Optic Cables
  • Single-Mode Fiber (SMF): Small core diameter, supports one light mode, suitable for long-distance, high-speed transmission (typically 1310–1550 nm wavelength), .
  • Multimode Fiber (MMF): Larger core diameter, supports multiple light modes, ideal for shorter distances and local networks .
Optical Network Configuration

Optical cable diagrams also illustrate how fibers are deployed in networks:

  • Passive Optical Network (PON): A feeder cable runs from the Optical Line Terminal (OLT) at the central office to a Fiber Distribution Hub (FDH), where splitters distribute signals to multiple subscribers. Drop cables connect the FDH to Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) at homes .
  • Active Star / Point-to-Point (P2P): Each subscriber has a dedicated fiber link to the central office or headend. This requires more fiber but allows direct, high-bandwidth connections .
Diagram Representation

A typical optical cable configuration diagram includes:

  1. Cable cross-section showing core, cladding, coating, strength members, and jacket.
  2. Network layout showing feeder, distribution, and drop cables connecting OLT, splitters, and ONTs.
  3. Annotations for fiber type (single-mode or multimode), wavelength, and connector types. These diagrams are essential for installation planning, troubleshooting, and ensuring proper signal transmission in telecommunications and data networks .
