Temporary power distribution box has its own grounding

A temporary power distribution box must be properly grounded and bonded to ensure safety, provide a low-impedance fault path, and comply with NEC requirements.

Purpose of Grounding and Bonding

Grounding and bonding of a temporary power distribution box (TPDB) are critical for personnel safety, equipment protection, and proper operation of overcurrent protective devices. Grounding connects the system to earth to stabilize voltage and limit the effects of lightning, surges, or accidental contact with higher voltage lines, while bonding interconnects all metallic parts to maintain the same electrical potential and prevent dangerous touch voltages. Equipment Grounding Conductor (EGC)The EGC is a key component in a TPDB.

It connects all non-current-carrying metal parts of the box, including enclosures, frames, and receptacles, back to the system's grounded conductor or grounding electrode. This creates a low-impedance path for fault current, ensuring that overcurrent protection devices (OCPDs) trip promptly in the event of a ground fault.

The EG

C must be sized according to NEC Table 250. 122 based on the rating of the OCPD.

Grounding Electrode System

A TPD

B installed in a building should be connected to an approved grounding electrode, such as a ground rod, metal underground water pipe, concrete-encased electrode, or ground plate, as specified in NEC 250. 52(A). This connection stabilizes the system voltage relative to earth and provides a reference point for fault currents.

The grounding electrode conductor (GEC) should be mechanically secure and continuous to maintain reliability.

Bonding of Metallic Parts

All metallic components of the TPDB, including the enclosure, internal bus bars, and any connected equipment, must be bonded together. Bonding ensures that all conductive parts are at the same potential, eliminating touch hazards if a fault occurs. This is especially important in temporary installations where equipment may be moved or exposed to the public.

Practical Installation Tips

Verify continuity of the EGC each time the TPDB is installed. Use heavy-duty, properly rated conductors for the main feeder wires, including the ground, based on the anticipated load (e.g., 6 AWG copper for a 50-amp inlet),. Ensure the enclosure is rated for the environment (NEMA 3R for outdoor use).

Connect the system neutral to the grounding electrode only if required by NEC for separately derived systems. Maintain a mechanically secure connection to the grounding electrode to prevent accidental disconnection.

Summary

Proper grounding and bonding of a temporary power distribution box in a building involves: Connecting the system to an approved grounding electrode. Installing a correctly sized equipment grounding conductor to interconnect all metallic parts. Bonding all conductive components to maintain equal potential.

Ensuring continuity and mechanical security of all connections. Following these practices ensures safety, compliance with NEC standards, and reliable operation of temporary electrical systems in construction, industrial, or event settings.
