Optical cable to Suriname

Suriname's optical cables are connected through a combination of international submarine systems and domestic fiber networks, linking the country to regional and global internet hubs.

International Submarine Connections

Suriname is connected to multiple subsea fiber-optic cables that provide high-capacity international connectivity. Key systems include: Deep Blue One: Operational since August 2024, this 2,250 km submarine cable links Suriname with French Guiana, Guyana, and Trinidad & Tobago, delivering up to 25 Tbps of capacity.

Ella

Link Caribbean Gateway: Suriname joined this high-capacity transatlantic system, providing direct connectivity to Europe, Brazil, and the United States. This cable enhances redundancy, reduces dependency on a single route, and offers low-latency access to Tier-1 data centers.

Americas II and Suriname-

Guyana Submarine Cable System (SGSCS): These older systems connect Suriname to the Caribbean and North American networks, with terrestrial extensions linking local networks to the international backbone.

Domestic Fiber Network

Within Suriname, Telesur has been the primary driver of fiber deployment: The National Broadband Project, completed in 2019, extended fiber to urban areas, offering residential plans with speeds ranging from 50/50 Mbps to 200/200 Mbps. Fiber rollout is concentrated along the coastal urban corridor, where about 66% of the population resides, while interior regions have limited connectivity, often relying on slower 2G/3G networks. Fiber connections are typically terminated at local exchanges and data centers, which then distribute service to homes and businesses via optical network terminals (ONTs) or fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) setups.

Connection Architecture

Submarine cables land at coastal landing stations, where they are connected to terrestrial fiber backbones. Redundant routes are implemented to ensure reliability, with multiple cables providing alternative paths to international hubs. Urban distribution uses a combination of fiber rings and point-to-point connections to ISPs and enterprise networks, while rural areas may use wireless or hybrid fiber-wireless solutions due to lower population density.

Future Developments

Suriname continues to expand its optical network: Integration with EllaLink and other next-generation systems is part of a strategy to modernize the country's digital infrastructure and support economic growth. Government initiatives aim to improve interior connectivity, supported by projects funded by the Inter-American Development Bank and the National Digital Strategy 2023–2030. Overall, Suriname's optical cable network combines international submarine links with a domestic fiber backbone, ensuring high-speed connectivity for urban areas and gradually extending access to rural regions.
