Internal Structure of the Fiber Reinforcement Tray

A fiber reinforcement tray (FRP cable tray) consists of a composite structure of continuous glass fibers embedded in a resin matrix, reinforced with ribs and side rails to provide high strength, durability, and cable protection.Core Composition

FRP cable trays are made from fiberglass reinforced plastic, where continuous glass fibers act as the primary reinforcement and epoxy or polyester resin serves as the matrix material, binding the fibers and providing structural integrity . The pultrusion process is commonly used to form the tray, ensuring a consistent cross-section and uniform mechanical properties over long lengths . The ratio of high-quality glass fiber to resin is carefully controlled to balance strength, flexibility, and impact resistance .

Structural Components
  1. Main Frame and Side Rails: Continuous glass fibers are arranged directionally to form a mesh reinforcing layer, which provides longitudinal tensile strength exceeding 300 MPa and transverse bending strength over 200 MPa . Integral side rails enhance rigidity and protect cables from mechanical damage .
  2. Tray Bottom: FRP trays may have a perforated or solid bottom. Perforated bottoms improve ventilation and heat dissipation, while solid bottoms offer additional protection against dust, moisture, and debris .
  3. Reinforcing Ribs and Stiffeners: Internal ribs or stiffeners are incorporated to increase load-bearing capacity and prevent deformation under heavy cable loads . These features allow the tray to maintain structural integrity even under dynamic or vibration-prone environments.
  4. Functional Modules: FRP trays include straight sections, elbows, tees, and crosses, enabling flexible installation in complex cable routing systems . Ladder-type trays have rungs for ventilation, while channel-type trays provide a closed structure for enhanced protection .
Surface and Environmental Treatments

The tray surface can be treated with UV-resistant coatings, flame retardants, or anti-slip finishes to improve durability, fire safety, and environmental resistance . FRP trays are inherently non-conductive, corrosion-resistant, and resistant to moisture and chemicals, making them suitable for industrial, coastal, and high-humidity environments .

Performance Characteristics
  • Lightweight yet strong: FRP trays are 30–70% lighter than steel but maintain high specific strength .
  • Fire and chemical resistance: Flame-retardant resins and non-metallic composition enhance safety .
  • Versatile installation: Can be mounted horizontally, vertically, or suspended, with modular components allowing easy customization . In summary, the internal structure of an FRP cable tray combines continuous glass fiber reinforcement, resin matrix, side rails, perforated or solid bottoms, and internal stiffeners to provide a lightweight, durable, and safe solution for cable management in diverse environments .
