How to test multimode fiber using OTDR

Multimode fiber testing with an OTDR requires using the correct wavelength (850nm or 1300nm), launch cables, and proper OTDR settings to accurately measure loss, locate faults, and assess fiber quality.

Key Considerations for Multimode Fiber Testing

Wavelength Selection: Multimode fibers typically use 850nm or 1300nm light sources for OTDR testing, as these wavelengths match the fiber's modal characteristics and provide accurate loss measurements over short distances (e.g., 300m to a few kilometers). Launch and Receive Cables: A launch cable (also called a pulse suppressor) is connected between the OTDR and the fiber under test to eliminate the dead zone at the start of the trace. A receive cable at the far end can help measure the loss of the final connector.

Both cables should match the fiber type and have low-loss connectors. Connector and Adapter Preparation: Clean all connectors and mating adapters before testing to avoid contamination, which can cause inaccurate readings or false events.

OTD

R Settings: Configure the OTDR for multimode fiber by selecting the appropriate wavelength, pulse width, and averaging time. Shorter pulse widths are suitable for short multimode links, while longer pulses may be needed for longer runs to improve signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Bidirectional Testing: While single-ended testing is often sufficient for multimode premises networks, bidirectional testing can improve accuracy for longer or critical links by averaging measurements from both ends, reducing errors caused by backscatter differences.

Trace Interpretation: The OTDR generates a trace showing distance versus attenuation, highlighting events such as splices, connectors, bends, or breaks. Multimode fibers have higher backscatter, so events are generally easier to detect than in single-mode fibers. Documentation: Record the OTDR trace, measured loss, and event locations for certification and troubleshooting purposes.

This ensures compliance with network standards and helps identify potential issues before they affect performance.

Step-by-

Step Procedure

Power on the OTDR and allow it to warm up. Clean all connectors and adapters. Connect the launch cable to the OTDR and the fiber under test.

Attach a receive cable if measuring the far-end connector loss.

Set the OTD

R parameters for multimode fiber (wavelength, pulse width, averaging). Start the test and acquire the trace. Analyze the trace for loss, reflections, and events.

Repeat from the opposite end if bidirectional testing is required. By following these steps and considerations, you can accurately test multimode fiber, identify faults, and ensure your network meets performance standards.
