Rules for Laying Optical Cables

Proper optical cable installation requires adherence to safety, handling, bending, tension, and environmental guidelines to ensure network reliability and prevent damage.

Safety and Preparation

Before installation, ensure the work area is properly signaled and cleared of hazards. Personnel should use eye protection and take precautions against fiber scraps and sharp objects. Underground utility locations must be identified to avoid accidental damage during construction, and all work should comply with local regulations and authorizations.

Handling and Cable Manipulation

Do not bend cables below the minimum bend radius specified by the manufacturer, as this can cause fiber breakage or signal attenuation. Avoid twisting or applying excessive force; use special cable lubricants if necessary. Keep cables in their protective material until installation, and avoid pulling directly on the fibers.

Use “figure-8” loops or circular reserves to prevent twisting during storage or pulling.

Pulling and Tension

Do not exceed the maximum pulling tension specified for the cable. For outdoor cables, typical long-term strength ratings are at least 2700 N, but always check the manufacturer's data sheet. Use breakaway pulling eyes, automated pullers, or pulling tape to control tension and prevent fiber damage.

For vertical installations, clamp cables at frequent intervals to support weight and prevent movement.

Environmental Considerations

Protect cables from sharp edges, rocks, and other objects that could damage the sheath. Respect maximum and minimum installation and storage temperatures for each cable type. For outdoor installations, ensure protective material is used if the cable remains exposed for more than 24 hours.

Splicing and Connections

Use splice protectors and leave sufficient cable reserves. Fibers not involved in splicing should be left untouched. Connections should be made with pigtails or direct connector mounting, and patch cords should be used from distributors to equipment.

Installation Methods

Underground installations may use ducts or inner conduits to protect cables. Aerial installations require proper support and tension control. Avoid sharp turns, turn-backs, and pulling over edges.

Smooth curves and gradual bends are essential.

Supervision and Quality Control

Supervise all stages of cable laying, splicing, and connection. Ensure all materials, drums, and equipment are available and in good condition. Verify compliance with manufacturer specifications and regulatory requirements to maintain network integrity.

Following these rules ensures reliable optical transmission, minimizes attenuation, and prevents costly repairs or downtime. Proper planning, handling, and supervision are critical for successful fiber optic cable deployment.
