Function of Optical Couplers in Electronic Components

Optical couplers, or optocouplers, transfer electrical signals between isolated circuits using light, providing electrical isolation and protecting sensitive components from voltage spikes and noise.

Core Function

An optocoupler is an electronic component that allows signals to pass between two circuits while keeping them electrically isolated. This isolation prevents high voltages or electrical noise from damaging sensitive components in low-voltage circuits, such as microcontrollers or sensors, and eliminates ground loops in complex systems. Unlike transformers or capacitors, optocouplers can transmit both AC and DC signals across the isolation barrier.

Internal Structure

Optocouplers typically consist of two main parts: Light-Emitting Diode (LED): Converts the input electrical signal into light, usually infrared. When current flows through the LED, it emits light proportional to the input signal. Photodetector: Detects the emitted light and converts it back into an electrical signal.

Common photodetectors include phototransistors, photodiodes, photodarlingtons, MOSFETs, SCRs, or TRIACs.

When the LE

D is on, the photodetector conducts, allowing current flow; when the LED is off, the photodetector blocks current, acting like a switch.

The LE

D and photodetector are enclosed in a light-tight package with an insulating material that provides electrical isolation, often rated for 2. 5kV to 5kV or more.

Applications

Optocouplers are widely used in electronics for: Signal isolation: Protecting low-voltage circuits from high-voltage spikes in power supplies or AC mains. Noise reduction: Preventing electrical noise from propagating between circuit stages. Logic level interfacing: Connecting circuits with different voltage levels without direct electrical contact.

Replacing relays or transformers: Providing compact, solid-state alternatives for switching and isolation in digital and analog circuits. Sensor and microcontroller circuits: Ensuring accurate readings by isolating noisy processing circuits from sensitive sensors.

Types of Optocouplers

Optocouplers can be classified based on input and output types: Input: Unidirectional (DC) or bidirectional (AC) LEDs. Output: Phototransistor, photodiode, photodarlington, MOSFET, SCR, or TRIAC, chosen based on speed, current handling, and application requirements.

Summary

In essence, optocouplers act as optical bridges that safely transmit signals between electrically isolated circuits, protecting components, reducing noise, and enabling reliable interfacing between different voltage domains in electronic systems.
