Niger Optical Cable Communication Project

Niger has completed a 1,031-km fiber-optic network and a Tier III data center under the Trans-Sahara Optical Fibre Backbone Project, significantly enhancing national and regional digital connectivity.

Project Overview

The Niger Optical Cable Communication Project is part of the Trans-Sahara Optical Fibre Backbone (TSB) Project, financed by the African Development Bank Group with a total cost of approximately €43–50 million ($50–53 million) and contributions from a national counterpart. The project aims to boost broadband access, reduce connectivity gaps, and strengthen regional digital integration across West Africa. Key ComponentsFiber-Optic Network: Total length: 1,031 km (640 miles)Covers five strategic routes connecting Niger to neighboring countries: Arlit–Assamaka to the Algerian border (220 km)Diffa–N'Guigmi to the Chadian border (186 km)Zinder–Magaria to the Nigerian border (117 km)Niamey–Dosso–Gaya to the Beninese border (300 km)Niamey–Makalondi to the Burkinabe border (118 km)Includes an 88-km urban local loop linking key administrative sites to the national data center.

Tier II

I National Data Center: Designed to support efficient data management, cybersecurity, and digital servicesProvides a foundation for e-government, mobile financial services, and e-commerce.

Strategic Importance

National Connectivity: The project addresses Niger's low internet penetration, where only one in five citizens currently has internet access, and reduces geographical exclusion in remote areas. Regional Integration: Cross-border links connect Niger to Algeria, Nigeria, Chad, Benin, and Burkina Faso, facilitating access to submarine cable networks in neighboring countries and enhancing resilience and international bandwidth. Economic and Social Impact: The infrastructure supports digital transformation, economic development, and improved public services, while laying the groundwork for future smart city initiatives and enhanced emergency response capabilities.

Future Prospects

The project positions Niger as a digitally connected hub in the Sahel region, enabling better integration with regional economies and providing a platform for long-term digital modernization. The network is expected to reduce connectivity costs, improve broadband access in remote regions, and support regional digital initiatives. In summary, the Niger Optical Cable Communication Project represents a major milestone in the country's digital infrastructure, combining a high-capacity fiber-optic backbone with a modern data center to drive national development and regional connectivity.
