Laying butterfly-shaped drop optical cable

Butterfly-shaped drop optical cables are flat, flexible, and reinforced for easy indoor and outdoor deployment, with specific bending, tension, and protection requirements. Cable Structure and FeaturesButterfly-shaped drop cables have a flat, butterfly-like cross-section with optical fibers positioned at the center and strength members (FRP or steel wire) on both sides, providing tensile strength and crush resistance. The outer sheath is typically LSZH or PVC for indoor use, and UV-resistant PE for outdoor applications.

This design reduces bending stress, prevents rolling or twisting during installation, and allows compact routing along walls, corners, and conduits. Single-mode fibers like G. 657A1 or G.

657A2 are commonly used for superior bend resistance.

Installation Guidelines

Routing and Protection: Use existing concealed pipes whenever possible. If unavailable, lay corrugated pipes or winding pipes to protect the cable, especially in vertical wiring bridges or floor crossings. Avoid direct underground installation as these cables are not water-immersible for long periods.

Bending Radius: Maintain a minimum bending radius of 30mm during installation and 15mm after fixing to prevent fiber damage. Tension Limits: Traction should not exceed 80% of the cable's allowable tension, with instantaneous maximum traction limited to 100%, applied to the reinforcing members. Handling: Use a cable reel for deployment and a cable tray to allow the reel to rotate freely, preventing entanglement.

Indoor vs Outdoor: Indoor butterfly cables are lightweight and cost-effective, while outdoor versions include additional UV-resistant sheaths and may be self-supporting with steel wire for aerial deployment.

Practical Considerations

Core Count: Single-core cables are suitable for residential access, while 2–4 core designs are recommended for business users. Splicing: Cold splicing is quick and suitable for emergency connections, whereas fusion splicing provides permanent, low-loss connections. Ease of Maintenance: The flat geometry and novel flute design simplify stripping, splicing, and connection in terminal boxes.

SummaryButterfly-shaped drop optical cables offer flexibility, durability, and space efficiency for FTTH and last-mile networks. Proper installation involves protective routing, adherence to bending and tension limits, and careful handling to ensure long-term performance and minimal signal loss. They are ideal for indoor and outdoor deployments where compact routing and mechanical reliability are critical.
