Fiber Optic Connection for Level-by-Level Switches

Use duplex fiber with SFP or BiDi modules to connect switches across levels, ensuring proper fiber type, topology, and signal alignment.Choosing Fiber and SFP Modules

For connecting switches across floors, determine the distance between switches: use multimode fiber (OM3/OM4) for runs under 1000 feet and single-mode fiber (OS2) for longer distances . Each switch should have SFP or SFP+ transceiver modules compatible with the fiber type and desired bandwidth (1G, 10G, or higher), . Standard SFP modules require duplex fiber, with separate strands for transmit (TX) and receive (RX), while BiDi SFP modules can transmit and receive over a single strand, useful when fiber availability is limited .

Cabling and Termination

Terminate fiber with LC connectors or use pre-terminated LC-LC fiber cables for simplicity . When connecting two switches, ensure the TX of one SFP connects to the RX of the other and vice versa. For multi-level deployments, maintain consistent labeling and polarity to avoid miswiring.

Network Topology

Two common topologies for multi-level switch connections are:

  • Star Topology: All floor switches connect to a central core switch. This reduces collisions and simplifies management but requires sufficient SFP ports on the core switch .
  • Daisy Chain: Switches are connected sequentially. This is simpler but can create bottlenecks and single points of failure.
Media Converters

If a switch lacks SFP ports, use a fiber media converter to bridge copper Ethernet to fiber. This allows integration of legacy switches without replacing hardware and extends connections beyond the 100-meter Ethernet limit .

Signal Monitoring

Monitor TX/RX light levels to ensure proper signal strength. Typical SFP modules provide transmit (TX) and receive (RX) power readings in dBm. Ensure the RX power at the receiving switch is within the acceptable range to avoid errors or link drops .

Best Practices
  • Use duplex fiber for standard SFP modules; consider BiDi for single-strand constraints.
  • Match SFP module type to fiber type (single-mode vs multimode).
  • Maintain clean connectors to reduce insertion loss.
  • Label cables and ports clearly for multi-level deployments.
  • Test links with an optical power meter or switch diagnostics to verify connectivity. By following these guidelines, you can establish high-speed, reliable fiber optic connections between switches across multiple levels, ensuring scalability and minimal signal loss.
