How to install the heat sink box of the distribution box

Proper installation of a heat sink inside a distribution box ensures efficient heat dissipation, prevents overheating, and maintains electrical safety.

Mounting Location and Orientation

Heat sinks should be mounted on the side, door, or roof of the distribution box depending on airflow and space availability. A square cutout is required in the enclosure wall for the heat sink to protrude, and a bolt pattern around the perimeter secures it, compressing the gasket to prevent dust or water ingress. Ensure the heat sink does not obstruct access to other electrical components or violate clearance requirements.

Thermal Management Considerations

Heat sinks increase the surface area for heat transfer from internal components to the ambient air. The thermal resistance between the device and the heat sink, and from the heat sink to ambient, must be minimized. Use thermal interface materials to reduce contact resistance caused by surface roughness.

The heat sink's capacity should be calculated based on the internal heat load, maximum ambient temperature, and allowable enclosure temperature. For example, if a cabinet generates 1000W of heat with a maximum internal temperature of 60°C and ambient of 40°C, the heat sink must provide at least 50 W/°C conductance.

Sealing and Environmental Protection

Many heat sinks, such as ACT-HSC units, include a perimeter gasket to prevent water or dust from entering the enclosure. Ensure the gasket is properly seated and compressed during installation to maintain a weatherproof seal. This is critical for outdoor or high-humidity environments.

Airflow and Fan Integration

Some heat sinks include internal fans to blow hot air over fins, enhancing heat transfer. Ensure the fan orientation promotes efficient airflow and does not recirculate hot air within the enclosure. Avoid blocking intake or exhaust paths.

Safety and Compliance

Installation must be performed by qualified personnel in accordance with applicable electrical codes and fire safety standards. Maintain proper clearances from live components and ensure the heat sink does not compromise the enclosure's structural integrity or violate statutory requirements for distribution boxes.

Summary

Cut a precise opening in the enclosure for the heat sink. Mount the heat sink securely using the provided bolt pattern. Compress the gasket to ensure a dust- and water-tight seal.

Use thermal interface materials to reduce contact resistance. Verify heat sink capacity meets the thermal load requirements. Ensure proper airflow and fan orientation if applicable.

Follow all safety and code compliance requirements. Following these steps ensures efficient heat dissipation, protection of electrical components, and compliance with safety standards inside a distribution box.
