Fiber Optic Cable Cut-off and Splicing

For fusion splicing, the fiber optic cable should typically be stripped and cleaved to a length of about 3–10 cm, ensuring the bare fiber is fully covered by the splice protection sleeve.

Recommended Cutting and Stripping Lengths

Before splicing, the fiber must be carefully prepared: Stripping the outer jacket and coating: Use a cable stripper to remove the outer jacket and the inner coating layers. The stripped length is generally 50–100 mm (5–10 cm) for single-core fibers, which provides enough bare fiber for handling and insertion into the splice protection sleeve without leaving excess exposed fiber. Cleaving the fiber: After stripping, the fiber end is cleaved using a fiber cleaver.

The cleave should be precise and perpendicular to the fiber axis, producing a smooth end face. Avoid cutting too long, as the splice protection sleeve may not fully cover the bare fiber, and avoid cutting too short, which can make handling difficult. Bare fiber coverage: Ensure that the bare fiber length is sufficient to fit entirely within the splice sleeve, typically around 3–5 cm, depending on the sleeve size and splicing equipment.

Best Practices

Handle with care: Avoid touching the fiber end face after cleaving to prevent contamination or damage. Minimize time between cleaving and splicing: The prepared fiber should be spliced promptly to prevent dust or debris from affecting the splice quality. Use proper tools: High-quality fiber cleavers and fusion splicers are essential for achieving low-loss splices.

Check alignment and protection: After splicing, place the fiber in a heat-shrinkable splice protection sleeve to secure and protect the joint. By following these guidelines, the fiber will be properly prepared for a reliable, low-loss fusion splice, minimizing signal degradation and ensuring long-term network performance.
